ABOUT
The Dnipro Centre for Contemporary Culture is designed on the foundations of the historic complex built between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries.
Its three key parts — Old, New and Secretarial buildings — boast a vibrant architectural and functional legacy which chimes with the DCCC’s future role as our city’s international cultural centre.
The Old building, dated from 1852, is attributed to the architectural mastery of Alexander Ton who utilised the best features of the contemporary Yekaterinoslav (Dnipro’s pre-revolutionary name) style. The complex was later expanded to include the New building, erected between 1900 and 1902.
The New building is prominent for its opulent elements, such as its large marble staircase and a splendid second-floor meeting room.
Soon after, in 1904, the Secretarial building was attached via a passageway and was initially intended to serve as the insurance department and the secretary of government’s official residence.
During the Soviet period, the three buildings served as the administrative centre for the local military, and did not undergo any major remodelling.
Consequently, the complex has preserved its original layout, interior and facades, which provides the perfect setting for the DCCC’s ambitious mission of merging art, science, technology and education under one roof. The venue will serve a range of public functions, and will include an exhibition hall, an event and performance space, workshop areas, a modern work and study environment with the library and media access, a cafe and boarding facilities, as well as offices for cultural management.
